Our Mission

To promote sustainability by:

Sourcing & Buying Practices

Our goal at Kindred is to source locally as often and realistically as we can. We are adding more local products all the time. Focusing on local not only promotes our local economy but reduces our carbon footprint. We also prioritize offering organic, non-GMO, and sustainably sourced products.

Eliminating Food Waste

We work with Athens Food Rescue on a regular basis. Our partnership with this amazing organization has cut down on our food waste and ensured that those in need can be provided quality nourishment.

Eliminating Plastic Waste

The only grocery bags we use at Kindred Market are paper. We charge 20¢ each for them to encourage customers to bring reusable bags. We save the boxes from product deliveries and give them away to carry groceries home. We also save the plastic film that comes with our deliveries and donate it to a local plant shop to use as shipping materials, thereby diverting plastic waste to reusable.

Waste Composition

According to Rural Action’s Zero Waste Audit from March 2020, we recycle 657 lbs. of waste every week. This consists of cardboard and mixed recycling. We also compost 171 lbs. of waste each week. Only 44 lbs. of waste each week is true landfill trash. We are consistently working on better waste diversion including the addition of a “paper towels only” trash can in our restroom for compost.

Zero Waste Pledge

In October of 2020, Kindred Market officially made the Zero Waste Pledge through Rural Action. To ensure we continue to strive for Zero Waste, we established three pledge points to be completed by October 2021. These pledge points include the following:

  • Replace all receipt paper to non-BPA/BPS
  • Educate employees on waste diversion practices
  • Diverting compostable material from trash to compost bins

Need Plastic Film Wrap?

Help us reduce our plastic waste! We are looking for people who would like to repurpose plastic film wrap. We give it to a local plant shop part of the year to use for shipping and we hate throwing it away! If you are interested, please email  info@kindred.market.
